Daniel Timberlake
Dan Timberlake currently serves as the Director of the Virginia Department of Planning and Budget. He was first appointed to this post in August 2008 by then Governor Timothy Kaine and was reappointed to that position in 2010 by newly-elected Governor Robert McDonnell. Timberlake previously served as Deputy Secretary of Finance, a position to which he was appointed by Governor Kaine in 2006. With nearly 28 years of public service experience as an employee of the Commonwealth of Virginia, including the last 16 years in leadership roles, Timberlake has worked with top executive and legislative leaders in Virginia on finance, policy, and legislative issues covering a variety of program areas.
A graduate of the College of William and Mary (1984), Timberlake began his state career as a legislative aide in December 1984. His state service since that time includes two years at the Department of Transportation as an analyst, over 10 years at the Department of Planning and Budget where he progressed from analyst trainee to senior analyst, and more than 9 years at the Department of Education as the Assistant Superintendent for Finance prior to beginning his time as an appointed official.
As State Budget Director, Timberlake is a member of the National Association of State Budget Officers (NASBO) where he serves as Chair of the Education Committee and is a member of the organization’s Executive Committee.
